Fascination, Frustration, and Pull Tabs

My feelings for China are like the feelings of many Western authors who write about China…the country is simultaneously fascinating and frustrating. The last 24 hours are a great example: We had a wonderful lunch with Sun Yat-sen University faculty and students in a private room of a famous GZ restaurant. The food, conversation and company were great, and the kids had a great time (largely due to the TV in the corner that played cartoons, courtesy of the manager). On the other hand, I was informed that I needed a “body check” from the Guangdong International Travel Health Care Center in order to get our needed permits. (I received the health check this morning…I survived, though my “body check results and certificate” won’t be in until this afternoon.)

In environmental news, China has not banned pull tabs on soda and beer cans. These were banned in most states, with much debate, maybe twenty years ago.
